The Urgent Care Centre based in Walsall Town Centre was opened in October 2015 on a short term basis following public consultation. The longer term plans were that local urgent and emergency care services would be brought together at Walsall Manor Hospital.
The aim of the centre was to reduce the need for a visit to the Walsall Manor Hospital A&E department to relieve the pressure on our busy A&E staff so they are able to treat those patients that have life-threatening illnesses or injuries, until the point that the preferred longer term model of an integrated service on one site could be effectively established.
Likewise it was not intended to substitute a GP appointment and patients with non-urgent illness or injuries should be seeing their GP or local pharmacist in the first instance.
Our analysis shows, since the centre opened many people are attending when they could be treated by using a self-care option, visiting a pharmacy, ringing NHS 111 or an appointment with their own GP.
Walsall CCG undertook a listening exercise throughout January 2016 - The Big Conversation - to find out what local people think about urgent care services in Walsall and how they can be improved. We asked for views from Walsall residents, and anyone else who uses or works with urgent care services in the borough such as patients, healthcare providers, local councillors, voluntary organisations and Healthwatch to help shape the future of services in the borough.
NHS Walsall CCG has now launched a formal public consultation asking for the views of local people on the following three options for the Urgent Care Centre in the Town Centre.
