“Learning disabilities cannot be cured, but they can be treated successfully and children with LD can go on to live happy, successful lives.” – Anne Ford.
Although this quote may seem simple and straightforward, it’s actually an extremely important message for many of us to understand. It’s unfortunate, but far too many people see Learning Disabilities as a restriction of happiness or fulfilment. That just isn’t the case.
Our Learning Disability (LD) team here at Walsall CCG are incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about the work they do, and this was perfectly conveyed on Saturday, 22nd June at our Learning Disability Awareness event.
Expertly hosted by the wonderful Manor Farm Community Association, this event provided a space where people of all ages with, or connected to, Learning Disabilities were able to learn about the many LD services that are available across Walsall and the surrounding areas. Attendees of all ages were welcome, and plenty of volunteers were on hand to support the logistics; Kimberley was excellent with signposting the event outside, and both Alison and Michael were as friendly as ever on the welcome desk!
With this being the first LD Awareness event that we’ve organised, it was heartwarming to see the effort that was put in from our Stallholders, and we sincerely hope that they return next year to continue showcasing the amazing services they provide.
At the CCG, we had absolutely no idea how many people were expected to turn up. But, as long as we can walk away knowing that we have helped at least one Parent or Carer by pushing them in the right direction, towards the right service for them, then we know that the event was a success.
Thank you to everyone who attended, and we hope to see you again next year!
