Rethink Mental Illness GP Mental health support service

The aim of the service is to support people with mental health difficulties who are repeatedly attending their GP surgeries or relying on them for emotional support. The service aims to drive a case management approach that prevents individuals from repeated visits to their GP, because they can be better managed elsewhere.

Approximately a quarter of all people will experience a mental health problem in the course of a year, and 23 out of 30 who experience mental health problems will visit their GP. Part of The NHS Long Term Plan is providing funding to improve mental health services and should result in GPs having more access to mental health training in order to refer patients to a wider variety of treatments beyond medication.
